The
Library's news feed uses a data format called RSS (or a similar
format called Atom) to let you automatically receive updates
to the Library News and Happenings page.
What
is RSS?
RSS
(Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for sharing
and distributing Web content. Using an RSS Reader, you can view
data feeds from various news sources and Weblogs. A feed offered
by a site is often labeled with an icon similar to this:
How
do I access RSS feeds?
To
get the Library's feed (or any site's feed), you use software
called an RSS/News Aggregator (also called a Reader). This will
download and display RSS feeds for you. A number of free and
commercial News Aggregators are available for download. There
are also Web based Aggregators. For a small list of Aggregators,
see this page at
Blogspace.
In
general, you can subscribe to a feed by pasting its Web address
into a form in the Aggregator. Subscribing to a number of different
feeds makes it easy to keep on top of news from a variety of
sources. For a step-by-step tutorial of some common Aggregators,
see this page
from Philadelphia University.
