Friends of India Make Donation to Library

The Library has received a $6000 donation from Friends of India of the Quad Cities. The money will be used to purchase materials about India and South Asia and to plan programs that promote cultural awareness. Library staff is working with a committee from Friends of India to plan a series of programs for all ages about India for the fall of 2006. Look for materials purchased with the gift on the India display area in our new merchandising center. We want to express our sincere thanks to Friends of India for this generous donation.

Award-winning Author Barbara Robinette Moss

Join us in the Bettendorf Room on Saturday, February 11 at 2 p.m. when author Barbara Robinette Moss will be at the library to speak about and read selections from her books which deal with her personal experiences with abuse as a child of an alcoholic. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Her visit is sponsored by Friends of the Bettendorf Library.

Moss is the author of two books: Change Me into Zeus's Daughter: A Memoir and Fierce: A Memoir. In her first book, Moss tells the vivid, sometimes humorous, yet heart-breaking story of how her family survived the tyranny inflicted by her abusive, alcoholic father. Her descriptions of growing up in overwhelming poverty while surviving abuse are candid and absorbing. In her second book, Moss describes what happens when she grew up. Determined to reinvent her life, the legacy of her childhood eventually catches up with her and threatens to destroy all her accomplishments. Ultimately, the book is the triumphant story of a woman who beats the odds and makes it on her own.

Moss hopes that her books will touch people and encourage other women to break the negative cycles in their own lives.

New Videos/DVDs

Steven Spielberg's new film, Munich, now in theaters, tells what happened after 11 Israeli athletes were kidnapped and slain at the 1972 Olympics. One Day in September, a new DVD in our collection, gives insights into the massacre.

Three of our newest foreign films are: Vodka Lemon (Armenia), the story of a widower, his three sons, and the woman he meets at his wife's gravesite. A Place Promised in Our Early Days (Japan) centers around three teenagers and the space-time continuum, and Mojados (Spanish) follows a group of Mexican men trying to make their way to seasonal work on U.S. farms.

Discoveries America: Iowa and Discoveries America: Washington D.C. explore various sites in our home state and our nation's capital. Visit another U.S. city in The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. This DVD follows a flock of wild urban parrots in the city of San Francisco.

Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library

The Friends annual membership drive begins in February. If you do not receive a membership letter in the mail and are interested in more information about the Friends, please stop by the library and pick up a copy. Single memberships are only $5 per year, allow you early entry to the twice a year Book Fairs and make the statement that you are a library supporter. Last year the Friends had over 500 members and received $6,900 in membership dues. The Friends is a volunteer organization and all proceeds go to fund library Wish Lists throughout the year. Each year the Friends provide thousands of dollars to purchase materials and programming for the library. Please consider joining. Attendance at the monthly meetings is not required, but you might be interested in attending one or more meetings to see just what the Friends do for the library. The meetings are usually around an hour long and are held the first Tuesday of each month, September through June at 7:15 p.m. in the library.

Mark your calendars for the Spring Book Fair. Members' Preview Sale will be Friday, April 7 from 5 - 7:30 p.m. General Sales will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday April 8 and from noon - 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 9. Thousands of books will be for sale, most for the bargain price of 25 cents.

Do you have gently used magazines and books that you no longer need? Please consider donating them to the Friends for the ongoing magazine sale and the twice a year book fairs. All book and magazine donations may be brought to the library any of the open hours. You may deposit your donations in the Friends area near the entrance to the café. Recycling the items you no longer need is another opportunity to support the Friends and the library.
