Reading Programs

Seasonal reading programs for children preschool through 5th grade are offered twice during the calendar year. A Winter Reading Program is provided for 4 weeks in January. The Summer Reading Program is offered for 8 - 10 weeks beginning the end of May and continuing through the end of July. A Read-To-Me Program is provided for children not yet reading on their own and a Readers program is also provided for independent readers. Participants must meet the required reading goals set by the Library to receive a reading certificate and awards. Each reading program is based on a theme which is carried throughout the materials, awards and displays.

Research shows that children are never to young to be read a story. With that in mind, toddlers and preschoolers (aged 12 months to 5 years) are invited to take part in a special reading program just for them! The toddler/preschool reading program is held during the month of October and is similar to the programs offered for older children. We have designed the handouts and awards so they are suitable for young listeners.

All programs are provided free of charge. Some programs do require registration. Check for more information in the Calendar of Events.

    Preschool Story Times

Children ages three through five are invited to attend Preschool Story Times, which are offered Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays through Thursdays at 10 a.m. The 30 minute sessions consist of stories and activities for the preschooler. Parents are required to stay in the Library, but do not attend the sessions. No registration is required. The same theme is shared throughout the week and stories are repeated from day to day.

Preschool Story Times are offered continually, with recesses occurring in December, May and August. For specific dates refer to the Calendar of Events.

    Tummy Time

Story times for babies and toddlers are offered in cooperation with the Bettendorf Community Schools, Birth-To-Five program. Children birth to age three and a caregiver are invited to come to the library for sessions filled with simple exercises, stories, songs, rhymes, parenting tips and more. The free sessions are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 10 a.m. and the second and fourth Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. No registration is required. All sessions will be held in the Junior League Program Room on the first floor. For specific dates refer to the Calendar of Events.
