The Bettendorf
Public Library Outreach Department provides delivery of Library
materials to the homes of Bettendorf residents who are not able
to come to the Library because of physical constraints or disabilities.
Eligibility includes those with temporary as well as permanent
disability. Materials are also delivered to residents of Bettendorf
nursing homes.
If you or someone you know would like to take advantage of
this service, call the Outreach Coordinator at (563) 344-4187
or e-mail us at CJohnson@bettendorf.lib.ia.us.
The Library maintains book collections at Bettendorf nursing
homes and senior apartment complexes. These rotating collections
contain a selection of the Library's collection of large type
books.
The Outreach Department offers a variety of entertaining and
educational monthly Senior Citizen's Day programs. For a schedule
of upcoming programs, check our Calendar of Events or the Library's newsletter,
Pages.
Bettendorf residents may borrow aids and equipment from the
Library to enable them to enjoy reading. These include book
holders, page turners and magnifiers, bed specs and large print
playing cards.
The Library is an agency for the Iowa Department for the Blind and has
applications for this program on file. If you have limited vision
or a physical disability, you may qualify to receive a tape
player and Talking Books.
Visitors to the Library who have low vision can take advantage
of our video magnification system. It can be used to read any
printed material. A computer in the Youth Department, named
"Bob", has a "big print" option that increases
computer accessibility for people with vision or motor skill
impairments. The computer has a magnifier, close captioning
and options for changing the keyboard for people with mobility
impairments.
We help deaf and hard-of-hearing customers with two text telephones
and a Telex assistive listening system for our meeting rooms
and a strong collection of materials. Any program sponsored
by the Library can be interpreted at no charge. Arrangements
must be made at least one week in advance. If you need a sign
language interpreter in the Library contact the Adult Services
Manager by phone (563) 344-4191.
Patrons with mobility problems can use our walkers or motorized
carts. The Rollator Avant rolling walker has a seat and a basket
and is convenient for those who have difficulty walking or standing.
Ask at our Reception Desk for the key to a Scooter motorized
cart.
Many patrons find it more convenient not to leave their cars,
and take advantage of our Pick-Up
Window. Call our Information Desk at 344-4179 to have staff
find your library materials and have them waiting for you at
our Pick-Up Window.
